Fungus Forays

October outings
to the cricket pitch.
Early morning.
Late evening.
Damp compost smells
through muffled fog.
Everywhere a fairy filigree
of dangling dew.
Layers of white ground lace
crocheted the cricket pitch.

Through the mist
glowed small white
ground globes.
Sprung from
a mycelium web.
Underneath—
pale fleshy gills
both pink and brown.
The white caps of Agaricus bisporus.
Foraging among the wet grass
my small basket bloomed
and mushroomed
with a white harvest.
