The Default Mode Network (DMN) and Creativity

A brain function mode of being creative
where problem-solving can be reactive.
The experience of being alone
with  solitude that you can own.
Most artists will tell you this is so
and brain scan research has let us know.
Idleness and relaxation may stimulate creativity
to energise the brain you don’t need activity.
In a Default Mode Network you use more energy
than in task-driven time  with mobility.
A task-negative network shuts cells down then
allowing more time for a thinking brain.
It seems strange that a resting brain
is actually busier than a task-focused one.
While daydreaming, the brain forces muster
in the precuneous  with six different clusters.
Expect an imbalance of divergent and convergent thought
to allow these networks their neurons to sort.

If creativity can be tracked in the brain
it can also be mapped to explain.
Firing networks followed by scanning techniques
can be seen when an active brain speaks.
You can think, evaluate and solve,
when a creative problem needs resolve.
This is not a run around task;
but relax and enjoy while you bask.
The mind can find while indulging
in daydreaming and mind wandering,
thinking about others and yourselves,
while reclining on neural network shelves;
drifting back into the distant past
without bothering to get there fast.
Then slowly forward to the future
thinking about our present culture?

Brain research is always ongoing
with new results often showing.
If idleness can be productive,
rest can be more attractive.
The lack of action is a temporary state
but a frequent need to re-create.
To re-create and give new life;
but recreation is away from work strife.
To lay back and allow a daydream
making an idea from a neuron stream.
Retire from an activity spin
and allow the DMN to kick in.
You are not necessarily completely still,
some find a walk or a shower will fulfill.
When a writer’s block prevents a connect,
trying too hard won’t help them select.
Being idle once meant lazy,
brain research tells us differently.
Idleness has been traditionally criticised
but work should not be constantly supervised.
If you are successfully self-employed
you find some time off to be enjoyed.
The results from time-driven people show
their productivity may be quite slow.

Constant use of an iPad and cell phone
means that you are never alone.
The modern world drowns in information
with less time left for relaxation.
This digitised world may prevent creativity
bombarding the day with too much activity.
The machines that tend to give brain clutter
also give addictive constant chatter.
During DMN ideas can incubate
and allow the brain to recalculate.
Recent research into devices of technology
has shown an imbalance in brain chemistry,
even affecting short-term memory,
and leading to grey matter atrophy.
Constant use may lead to addiction
and problems with your attention.
Overnight use can cause sleep deprivation
when it affects melatonin production.
Any type of biological harming
should send a clear warning.

It is more refreshing to explain
the effect of DMN on the brain.
It seems a recombination of ideas
may help a creative solution here.
A thought can occur in a daydream
to help a solution work with a team.
Remember any relevant part
and find yourself with a new start.
Not all downtime is constructive
and over-activity can be destructive.
The brain tells the body of burnout
and you must recuperate without doubt.

If your working day is to make a difference
you need a quiet place away from interference;
a peaceful uninterrupted zone
where you can be left alone.
If you know how and why, be aware,
that you don’t interrupt this process there.
Don’t snap out of it to write something down;
it may obstruct an idea only half shown.
Nikola Tesla said that being alone
is the time when ideas are born.

The Default Mode Network – simply
was not needed in Italy!
There are sayings within that country
which can lead you to perform properly.
“Dolce far niente” – it is sweet to do nothing.
There is much wisdom in that saying.
Blissful laziness and indulgent relaxation
was already known in the Italian nation.
“Il bel far niente”, beauty of doing nothing
can be heard in the song an Italian will sing.
“L’arte non fare nulla”,  the art of doing nothing.
Italians have made an art out of loafing.
“La Dolce Vita”  – the sweetness of life –
dispels any thought of strife.
Within their arts they are always creating
as they express the essence of living.
